Because jowls develop gradually, many people first notice them in photos — especially side profiles. A simple check is to compare a current photo with one from 10 years ago and look for:

  • Loose skin under the chin or around the lower face

Jowls can be stubborn. A good face cream may improve skin quality, but significant sagging usually needs more targeted treatment.

What causes jowls

Collagen and elastin loss

Starting in the late 20s, both proteins decline. The skin becomes less firm and less able to snap back.

Daily SPF for face, neck and jawline

Prevention, not treatment — but the most evidence-backed step you can take at home.

Limit: sunscreen will not lift existing jowls. It prevents the collagen breakdown that would make sagging worse.

Retinol or retinal neck cream

OTC retinoids gradually improve collagen and epidermal thickness. Improves quality, not lift.

Vitamin C serum

Antioxidant that supports collagen synthesis and protects against photoaging.
